So How Does It Work?
SchoolhouseTeachers.com is a rich library of learning experiences for students of every age. Once you become a member, the quick links page has an alphabetical listing of all the courses available. The courses can also be accessed either by grade or by subject. Important information including course components, directory, and samples can be found on the course information page. With the hundreds of choices, the decision of which courses to begin with can be a bit daunting. The scope and sequence page has individual charts separated by grade or by subject which is a great place to start. Also, SchoolhouseTeachers.com has a great members forum and an ebook library just for parents. These tools are such a great asset when creating your children’s individual curriculum.
The Lesson Plans included with each course allow parents to have a great overview of each course and the requirements. They also include detailed daily plans that are printable and easy to follow. The lesson plan page has a listing of courses by subject to make accessing them very easy. For older students, the lesson plans allow them to work independently with just occasional parental oversight. This reduces the teaching time for parents allowing them to focus on their younger students.
In addition to the hundreds of courses offered on SchoolhouseTeachers.com, you also receive access to a rich video library that contains over 450+ videos in multiple academic subjects as well as entertainment for children, marriage and parenting information, Bible studies, and more. It’s an incredible bonus included for free with your SchoolhouseTeachers.com membership.
As an added bonus, your SchoolhouseTeachers.com membership includes a subscription to numerous World Book online resource libraries. This access allows your students to dig deeper into subjects that interest them. This includes stunning pictures, educational videos and powerful research tools for your older students.
How Did We Use SchoolhouseTeachers.com?
Health- 2nd Grade
Our first experience with SchoolhouseTeachers.com was with the 2nd grade Health class: Growing Healthy in Second Grade. It is a 9-week course focused on food groups, the importance of a healthy diet, hygiene, safety and more. We used it as a supplement to my son’s PE credit. This is a breakdown from the course outline of what topics are covered in this course:
- Review of Growing Healthy in First Grade
- Food Groups
- Balanced Diet
- Hygiene, Keeping Clean, and Stopping the Spread of Germs
- Bad Weather Safety
- Using Manners at Home
- Good Manners Away From Home
- Using Good Table Manners
- Good Phone Manners
Here is a sample for Week 2 of the Growing Healthy in Second Grade course:
We have really enjoyed this relaxed introduction to health and nutrition. Each week of the course, a topic is introduced and then there are activities and worksheets you can do to reinforce the concepts throughout the week. Although there is a very detailed lesson plan that breaks the weeks down into two lessons per week, we found it flexible enough to fit in well with the flow of our week. Some weeks we did a whole lesson in one day and some weeks we spread it out over several days. Having that flexibility really allowed us to spend time on the areas we found most important and really drill down on some concepts with our son.
Week 6- Using Manners at Home:
We loved the concept of Polly’s Crackers, which are examples of ways to use manners in your everyday life. We have been having some challenges in the manners department with both our 8-year-old and our 2.5-year-old. They both sat in on this lesson and I was impressed with how much they grasped from the material. We created a “Polly’s Cracker” reward (also known as Saltine crackers, which are their favorite right now) and every time we caught them using one of Polly’s suggestions, they would receive a “Polly’s Cracker” as a reward. I have seen a marked improvement in their behavior and they are loving all the extra snacks!
High School Options
The next thing I tackled with SchoolhouseTeachers.com was creating a complete curriculum for my rising 11th grader. We have always taken an eclectic approach to homeschooling, choosing what works best for each of our students. This is her current 10th grade curriculum list. She has struggled a bit this year with the curriculum we chose. I wanted to see how it would look to create a full curriculum for her next year using just the courses in SchoolhouseTeachers.com. I was amazed at all the High School homeschool courses available. We are having a hard time narrowing down our favorite choices. We haven’t made final decisions yet, but below you will find a full list of all the courses we are considering for her for next year.
- Art & History: Interconnected
- Digital Art and Product Designs for Small Business
- Advanced Public Speaking
- Advanced Spanish Fluency
- Music Throughout History
- Advanced Music Theory
- College Choice Guidance
- Home Economics
- SAT-ACT Prep
- Business Plan Creation
- Podcasting to Change the World
It seems like the options are endless. I have no doubt that if we choose to use SchoolhouseTeachers.com for her full curriculum next year, she will have a rich learning experience and the variety of interesting courses that she is craving. We’ll keep you posted on our decision.
What Did We Love?
We loved the hundreds of online classes to choose from in SchoolhouseTeachers.com. There were some courses that I am actually considering completing myself. The rich content and the flexibility of the courses certainly lends itself to being a great fit for so many different families.
We loved the built-in support system- from the member’s forum to the parent’s ebook library, the literacy center, and the tons of planning resources- there is help for every aspect of homeschooling and it is valuable information from mamas and daddies that have been through it all. It is an important aspect of the system as a whole, therefore, I would recommend you utilize it as much as you can.
We loved the idea that for one price we can fully school our entire family. No additional textbooks to buy or hours of planning out lessons, it is truly an affordable option that will give you peace of mind.
What Did We Not Love?
The only thing I could find that might be a challenge is the need to print out worksheets could be a bit much for some families. As a result, you may need to find ways around the cost of printing. You could either utilize the Homeschool Printing Company or by using a tablet that allows for students to fill out PDF forms directly.
The cost of membership versus the value you are receiving ultimately does not even compare. I have spent literally hundreds of dollars for one subject for one student for one year. Multiply that by four students over 12 years and truly the value speaks for itself.
