We are happy to bring you a review today via the Schoolhouse Review Crew of a great Spanish learning program, Speekee TV. Speekee TV is unique in it’s approach to teaching children Spanish in that there is no official curriculum- no workbooks to work through or books to read. Speekee TV uses primarily a “watch and play” immersion method of learning.
When I first heard about this review, I was excited to let my older son work with me on this review. My daughter has recently reviewed another Spanish learning program and my son has been asking for a chance to learn Spanish as well. This seemed like a great opportunity for him. Once I received the final information I realized that the target age group for this program is 2-10 years old. My son has just recently turned 10 and I was concerned that it might be too easy for him and not hold his attention long enough for him to learn. But he was eager to try so we decided to give it a go.
When we first received access to the program, I immediately signed up for the Fast Track enrichment plan (which is FREE with a subscription). The Fast Track is an easy to follow 40 week plan with each week featuring suggested activities to enrich your child’s learning including games, worksheets, flash cards, and more. I figured this would be a great addition to the video lessons for my little guy.
I waited to receive the first week of the Fast Track via email before we began the program as it offers information corresponding to the video lessons and I wanted him to have the full experience. I loved receiving that first email packed full of great ideas. It started with viewing the first video in the series (El Parque- the park). I have to admit, I was a bit concerned as the video started. The videos are a mix of live action with children overlayed with puppets all set to music and song. It did not look like something that my 10 year old would enjoy. I did receive an eye roll or two as we began, but I must admit- I was pleasantly surprised to see that the video kept his attention for the full 13 minutes.
I think the thing that worked for him is that he was truly learning Spanish- he finished the video and was immediately able to say a few phrases and he LOVED that!! The remainder of the Fast Track email included activities such as making sock puppets, creating a game using phrases from the video, and included ideas such as singing a song using the sock puppets you made. I have to admit that most of those activities were a little young for my guy, but I was not concerned. I believe he got what he needed out of the lesson.
In the following weeks, the enrichment activities were more interesting for him and the downloadable worksheets were a great addition to the lessons. All in all I believe this program is a success for him. He is still happy to watch the videos and he has retained the Spanish words and phrases that he has learned so far.
I would say that I would recommend this program for students who are more in the 2-8 year age range, however it would vary based on your individual child. I believe my daughter at 8 would have enjoyed some of the enrichment activities a bit more than he did and the videos would be very entertaining to a bit younger audience. The content and the quality of the information in the videos is good and I believe this is a great way to introduce Spanish to young students.
